John Gill Pratt Papers

1834-1899

Correspondence, accounts, reports, land allotments, deeds, contracts, vouchers, and other papers. The letters for the 1st few years are largely personal in nature. Later papers fall into divisions based on J. G. Pratt's activities: missionary printer at the Shawnee Baptist Mission, present Mission, Kan. (1837-44); head of the Stockbridge mission near Fort Leavenworth, Kan. (1844-48); leader of the Delaware Baptist Mission in Wyandotte County, Kan. (1848-64); and U.S. Indian agent at the Delaware Agency with headquarters at Leavenworth, Kan. (1864-68). The largest segment falls within the period of Pratt's service as U.S. agent to the Delaware Indians. ǂb The Pratt collection provides a thread of continuity through several Indian agencies located in what is now Kansas. The early period of this collection includes the time the Delaware were under the care of the Fort Leavenworth Agency which also included the Shawnee, Kickapoo, Munsee, and Christian Indians, the Stockbridge, and the Kansa. In July 1843, the Wyandot arrived in the West and purchased a small tract of land from the Delaware reserve on the Kansas River. Thus they became involved in the Fort Leavenworth Agency along with the Delaware.
